As a lupus warrior and holistic nutritionist, I have spent years searching for the right solution to heal my gut issues. I went to a GI Doctor and was prescribed Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) and antacids. I also went to a Functional Medicine Doctor who prescribed me many probiotic supplements. Although these helped, I knew these only temporarily calmed the symptoms but didn’t get to the root cause of the problems.
I had a LEAKY GUT caused by pathogen infections, like candida overgrowth and reactivated Epstein-Barr virus.
I did extensive research and everything kept pointing back to the power of gut health to treat many chronic conditions, like lupus.
Based on an article published in the National Institute of Health, “The influences of Lupus disease activity and Gut dysbiosis may be bidirectional.” Really?
I started putting two and two together. I discovered that harmful bacteria, such as Enterococcus faecalis , can contribute to colon and small intestine infections. In a research article posted by the Lupus Research Alliance, Dr. Kreger discovered the same to be true and stated, “ impaired intestinal barrier function plays a very important role, which can increase gut microbiota translocation and promote lupus progression.” Whhhhhatttttt!
I previously published a blog post highlighting how “Ruminococcus blautia gnavus” can cause lupus flares.
I began to prove this theory to be true based on my own experiences.
I got a colonoscopy done in April 2023, and I was diagnosed with “infectious colitis ', which meant that my colon and small intestine were inflamed from underlying pathogenic infections.
I also was diagnosed in January 2023 with a hiatal hernia, which caused chest pain and an imbalance in my microbiota, causing significant indigestion issues.
I suffered from all the uncomfortable and painful symptoms, such as stomach pains, gas, bloating, sudden weight loss (loss of ⅓ my body weight), acid reflux, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, insomnia, as well as hives from histamine intolerance. It was absolutely horrible. I was so afraid to eat at one point because I didn’t know the consequences.
My relationship with food was impacted.
But the truth is ...
I had a leaky gut. My lupus was active. I was in a severe flare.
It all makes sense! Improve the gut, reduce lupus flares!
So I started, again. I focused on improving my gut health and really tapping into my body. It was communicating to me but was I listening?
At first, I took many different probiotic supplements, but nothing seemed to work. That is until I discovered Water Kefir, and other naturally fermented foods and how to increase food digestibility.
Water Kefir, also known as tibicos, is a fermented drink made from water, sugar, and kefir grains. The recipe is super easy! These grains are a combination of bacteria and yeast that work together to create a probiotic-rich drink that is packed with health benefits. Think Komucha but easier! (Don't’ worry, the sugar is eaten by the kefir grains!)
Since incorporating Water Kefir into my daily routine, I have noticed a significant improvement in my gut health. It literally has only been 3 weeks and I feel lighter than ever. I have already reduced digestive issues from incorporating more fermented foods into my diet. But now, I no longer experience bloating and my stool is smoother! I know, TMI 🙂
My gut feels healthier and more balanced than ever before. I feel stronger and more confident in my body. My lupus markers are improving. Thank you, gut health.
Water Kefir is rich in probiotics, which are essential for maintaining a healthy gut microbiome. These probiotics help to reduce inflammation in the gut and help regulate the immune system. They also aid in the digestion of food and the absorption of nutrients, which is key to healing.
In addition to its probiotic benefits, Water Kefir is also a great source of vitamins and minerals. It contains high levels of B vitamins, vitamin K, and folic acid, as well as minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus.
Water Kefir is also beneficial for individuals with diabetes and even cancer! Water Kefir has also been show to improve brain health. Can it reduce brain fog?
Overall, Water Kefir has been a game-changer for me. It has helped me to reclaim my health and feel better than ever before. Did I say enough about Water Kefir, yet?
If you are struggling with gut issues, I highly recommend giving Water Kefir a try. It just might change your life, too.
Note: You can buy the kefir grains here. The instructions come with the package. Again, it’s a super easy process. This is my Amazon storefront and I get a small commission for your support. Thank you in advance.
I hope you found this blog post helpful. As you can see, I do a lot of research and make sure to try it for myself before sharing.
